Early Life and Career Information
Born on December 10, 1984, to Irish-Americans Will Flay and Dorothy Barbara Flay, Bobby Flay was brought up in Manhattan, New York City. While growing up, Bobby had very little interest in academic pursuits. However, he displayed a phenomenal talent for cooking.
As such, Bobby eventually dropped out of high school at age 17 to pursue his passion in the kitchen. Shortly after he left school, he obtained his first professional restaurant job in 1982 after his father, a partner at Joe Allen Restaurant, ordered him to fill in for a sick worker. While working there, his natural talent once again caused him to excel until Joe Allen eventually noticed him.
Intrigued and inspired by young Bobby’s skill, Joe arranged for Bobby to attend a French Culinary school to hone his talent. Upon graduation in 1984, Bobby caught a lucky break when he became the official cook at Brighton Grill after the former official cook was fired. However, he quit when he discovered he couldn’t handle the position and wasn’t quite ready to run the kitchen.
His decision to leave Brighton Grill was a blessing in disguise because it eventually became the starting point of his illustrious career. Bobby got a job as a chef for a distinguished restauranteur named Jonathan Waxman, whom he often credits for introducing him to southwestern and Cajun cuisine.
Soon after, his popularity skyrocketed. Bobby began working in several restaurants in New York City until he eventually caught the eye of a restauranteur looking for a chef with his portfolio. The restauranteur, Jerome Kretchmer, offered him the executive chef position at Mesa Grill, and soon, he became a partner.
He opened several franchises of Mesa Grill before opening “Bar Americain” in 2005 in Manhattan. Bobby continued expanding his reach by opening numerous franchises and restaurants across America.
Bobby also dived into other ventures by hosting and appearing in cooking shows and specials in Food Network until he pretty much became a household name. He also landed a few minor acting roles, such as his role in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
His zeal and passion for cooking led him to establish the Bobby Flay Scholarship in 2003—a full annual scholarship awarded to a student in the Long Island City Culinary Arts Program. Each year, Bobby is personally involved in selecting the awardee who would then attend the French Culinary Institute.
After working with Food Network for 27 years, Bobby Flay eventually left the network in 2021, when his contract expired.
Bobby has been married thrice and has only one child from his previous marriages.
